There's nothing nicer than a well stocked garden pond whether you just have water plants or fish as well. They are such a restful feature, somewhere to just sit beside and feel tranquil and rested.

However, to keep your pond sweet smelling and healthy you have to take care of it. If you are lucky enough to have your pond connected to moving water than you don't have to bother with pumps the water will be naturally refreshed and moved around to prevent build up of debris.

If you pond is isolated then it is definitely going to need a pump. Water needs to be moved around hourly, at least half the capacity but preferably the whole capacity should be moved every hour.

You also have to consider what happens when a pond stagnates you could get mosquitoes breeding and that would make it not such a nice thing to sit beside.

The pump is literally the heart of any pond. It is as necessary to pond health as your heart is to your health. A submersible pump is the most economical for a smaller pond containing anything up to 1000 gallons of water. Because they are submersed there is no noise and they also come in useful in helping to drain the pond when necessary.

The only thing against submersible pumps used to be that they could rupture and release coolant into the water causing danger to the fish. However, today's newer pumps are magnetic-driven and this means they no longer need coolant.

These mag-drive pumps are slightly more expensive to buy in the first place but they will pay that back over time because they need less electricity, they are quiet and they are more reliable long term.

It is a simple thing to calculate the cc of your pond. it it is oblong or square in shape simply multiply the length in feet x width in feet x depth in feet and your answer will be cubic feet.

If it is circular then you need to multiply half the diameter x half the diameter x depth, all in feet and the answer again will be cubic feet. Each cubic foot will hold 7 1/2 gallons of water, so to calculate the pond's capacity in gallons simply take the total cubic feet multiplied x 7 1/2 and your answer will be gallons.

If you are going to stock your pond with fish and perhaps have a fountain then you should go for one size larger pump than you would have chosen just based on the cubic capacity of your pond.
